Air and water, Energy: Sorubin
Innovative technology for energy efficient water treatment
Aeration involves the creation of air bubbles in water for the oxygen in the air to be transferred to the water and be used for the chemical / biological purification processes. This method has been used by more than 100 years – and it works well. But water treatment is an energy intensive industry. Today every modestly modern country consumes 0.5% of its total electricity consumption for aeration of wastewater.
Sorubin has the next generation of aerators
Sorubin has developed a new technology for the aeration of water that can save up to 90% of the energy required for the process compared to current technologies. This means that each wastewater treatment plant can save millions each year while the “carbon footprint” can be reduced significantly for an entire industry.
Sorubins aerators – energy efficiency in a nutshell
Sorubin’s aerator consists of an aeration cover which is open at the top for air intake and that lets water in at the bottom. In the center of bottom plate of the pipe there is a hole where water and air is pumped out with a special suction impeller. The fine air bubbles are formed in the impeller.
Sorubin’s aerators are energy efficient because energy losses are small. The engine has a heat loss and there is friction due to the impeller. Other technologies for aeration have considerably larger energy losses.
Sorubin has customers in all areas of water treatment: landfill leachate, municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater and drinking water production. There are already customers outside of Sweden and Sorubin has an office in Tokyo, Japan.
Market facts and trends
The global market for aeration of water valued at approx. 5 billion euro (7 billion US dollars; 4.5 billion British pounds) annually (2010). Many water treatment facilities suffer from outdated equipment that is hugely energy inefficient and expensive to operate. In addition, environmental legislation, e.g. the EU’s Water Directive 2015, spurs market growth.
Sorubin’s solutions are long term cost effective since they give customers a radically reduced energy consumption by up to 90%.
Sorubin’s aerators can be installed on top of existing technical solutions. There is no downtime for retrofitting of Sorubin’s aerators.
Sorubin’s technology is robust and therefore very reliable.
Sorubin’s products are environmentally friendly and create a minimal negative environmental impact throughout their life cycle.
Sorubin creates stronger relationships with its customers than any of the existing players in the market can or want. This results in very high customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Stefan Sandström, CEO
To add oxygen to wastewater through aeration is one way to speed up the natural processes of water treatment as this allows the organic materials in the water to be broken down. This is an important process regardless of the water purification solution one chooses, however today’s systems require substantial amounts of energy. The Sorubin solution is based on exploiting the vortex, the natural movement of water, a far more energy efficient system of aeration.
