Applied Biomimetic have adopted the very idea for sorting and separating molecules that nature has been refining over millions of years.
The technology is based on aquaporin and other trans-membrane proteins found in almost all living cells. Using electric charge and gatekeeping mechanisms, these highly specialised proteins are controlling the flow of a wide range of molecules in and out of cells across the cell membrane. The ability to mimic nature’s control mechanism for molecular flows in cells paves the way for a wide range of useful applications.
Aquaporin allows only water molecules to pass through the cell membrane. Embedded aquaporins, stacked in multiple layers on a polymer base, are the active ingredient in the Mangrove membrane.
Our basic biotechnology concept – embedding proteins (aquaporins) into a polymer membrane – is already being implemented in applications for water treatment. Mangrove Membranes, a subsidiary of Applied Biomimetic, is licensing our IPR to develop cost-efficient prototypes for various commercial water purification applications, such as
